Three Bay Area artists, Russ Osterweil of Oakland and Michael Rosen and Thomas Hammel of San Francisco, are among the winners and finalists of "Waking Dreams," this year's international competition sponsored by the Ultimate Eye Foundation.
This year's winners are Stephanie Hogen (Figure Photography) and Gabrielle Kellar (Digital Art Based on Photography). Each winner receives a $5,000 grant from the Ultimate Eye Foundation, which will be presented by UEF co-founders James and Kathryn Daugherty at the reception on Friday, March 21 (7 to 9 p.m.)
According to James Daugherty, ìThe Ultimate Eye Foundation encourages the advancement of digital photography and photography of the human figure. The awards are given to living artists in appreciation for what they have done through their creations to advance the photographic arts.î
Photographic digital works are among the newest of art media," according to Daugherty. "While many of us are still playing with the toolboxes, a handful are turning out masterpieces. It is fascinating to see these classics before the art world quite knows what to do with them.
"Photographs of the human figure, on the other hand, have been with us since the beginnings of photography. It is a medium that never goes stale, and it is always a delight to discover artists who can find new approaches to present this timeless theme."
